Congratulations to the St. Ignatius Boys Tennis Team! For the first time since 1991, the Boys Team captured the Chicago Catholic League Conference title. The team's number one singles, number one doubles and number two doubles all placed first. Last year, under Susan Markvart's coaching, the Boys Tennis Team won the IHSA Sectional title for the second time in its history and four of its players advanced to State, but the Conference title narrowly eluded them (making Friday's victory especially sweet). This Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, St. Ignatius will host the Sectional Championship as the favorite.

Saint Ignatius - In Focus TV Video Ready for Airing
4/15/2013
Back in November, the film crew from the Public TV program, In Focus with Martin Sheen, visited Saint Ignatius to film interviews and campus shots for the Public Television program. That video segment has now been completed and can be seen on the school’s YouTube channel by CLICKING HERE. In the video, Saint Ignatius shows how students at Catholic college prep schools are enriched beyond the content of their curriculum to live spiritual and faith filled lives inspired by the Gospel. The short film includes interviews with faculty, staff, and students and captures shots of the campus. These “short form” editorial videos are often used to bridge the gap between longer Public Television programs. They air independently as stand-alone segments on individual Public TV stations.
The airings of the Saint Ignatius College Prep segment will be taking place in select cities during peak and prime time on various cable networks from April 15 to April 30. Additionally, we anticipate the Saint Ignatius story being distributed to Public Television affiliates the week of April 22. The exact dates and times of the airings are at the discretion of the network programmers and affiliate stations.

While at Brother Rice he competed in every varsity basketball game during his four years, earning All-Catholic League as a junior and senior, and also All-State honors. He is the school’s third leading scorer. He attended the University of Notre Dame on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1968. In 2011, he was inducted into the inaugural class of Brother Rice’s Circle of Champions, and in 2012, John was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League’s Hall of Fame.

NEW VIDEO - Thank You for Supporting Gloriam 2013!

Over 800 current and past parents, alums, and friends of the school turned out on March 9 to raise funds for Saint Ignatius College Prep. Your generosity helped raise money for the Tuition Assistance Program--helping qualified students attend Saint Ignatius regardless of family income.
Your support will put iPads in the hands of students in need as Saint Ignatius prepares to roll out this technology to all students next year. The efforts of this year's Gloriam will also go towards much needed improvements to the infrastructure of the school's entryway.
I am grateful for your continued support of our school and its mission. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Michael Caruso, SJ
P.S. Many inquired the evening of Gloriam if once again I would be offering the "Christmas Eve with Fr. Caruso, SJ" auction item that was available at last year's Gloriam. After prayerful consideration, the school is delighted to announce this item is again open for bidding. We will accept bids until 3:00 p.m. on March 20, 2013. If you would like to bid, please email ryan.bergin@ignatius.org with the word "Christmas" in the subject line. Please include your name and the amount of your bid.
CHRISTMAS EVE WITH FR. CARUSO, SJ This auction item includes Fr. Caruso, SJ leading a Christmas liturgy in your family's home on Christmas eve. After prayer, it is time to mangia and, like any good Italian, Father won't come empty-handed when he arrives at your home with the finest assortment of Italian hors d'oeuvres. Father will also bring his very own limoncello, a recipe passed on to him by Sr. Rita. Finally, Father Caruso will bring his homemade cannolis to your Christmas Eve celebration. Value: Priceless. Boys Track Wins Jesuit Invite

The Wolfpack boys track team traveled to Washington, DC, on Friday, February 22 to compete in the Georgetown Preparatory Schools’ Jesuit Invite indoor track meet against the home team and Gonzaga from the DC area, three teams from New York city (Fordham Prep, Xavier, and Regis), and Loyola-Blakefield from Baltimore. Saint Ignatius triumphed with a comeback win, 101.5 to 97 for Fordham Prep, after falling behind 71 to 10 after five events. Senior co-captain Jack Keelan, who recently signed a letter of intent to run at Stanford next year, won the 1600-meter-run (4 minutes and 25.05 seconds) and the 3200 (9:11.48). Junior Chris Hawkins finished second in the 55-meter-hurdles (7.97 seconds), second in the triple jump (41 feet and 8 inches), and third in the long jump (19-10.5). The trip came at the invitation—and the generosity—of DC-area resident Ray Mayer, Ignatius 1951, who covered the costs with a generous gift. Mayer attended the meet with former Ignatius classmates Paul O’Shea and Tom Coyne. “We promised Ray Mayer a win,” said Ignatius coach Ed Ernst. “We just added a little bit of suspense for him when we started the meet a little bit slowly.”

Keelan ’13 Named Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year

1/21/2013
In its 28th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Jack Keelan ’13 as its 2012-13 Gatorade Illinois Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Keelan is the first Gatorade Illinois Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Saint Ignatius College Prep. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Keelan as Illinois’s best high school boys cross country runner. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in January, Keelan joins an elite alumni association of past state award winners in 12 sports. The 5-foot-11 senior raced to the Class 3A individual state championship this past season with a time of 14:05. Keelan also won the Niles West Sectional, the Chicago Catholic Championships, the Pat Savage Invitational, the Connelly Polka Invitational, the First to the Finish Invitational and the ICOPS Invitational. He finished fifth at the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional championships and was 26th nationally at the NXN Final. Keelan has maintained a 3.86 GPA in the classroom. A mentor in his school, he has volunteered locally on behalf of a church soup kitchen and a child-care center. “Jack faced severe disappointment as a junior when he failed to qualify for the state championships,” said Saint Ignatius coach Edward Ernst. “He showed tremendous character and grit overcoming that disappointment, and was a dominant runner this year. He’s been a leader for his teammates, and we’ll be a better team next year because of his example and the high bar that he has set.”

Below is a message from school Principal, Dr. Cathy Karl, regarding long-time Dean of Students, John Tracy. Dear All, As we all know our dean of 21 years John Tracy has not been with us during this school year. As some know, John has been dealing with a serious illness for some time now, but had hoped to be able to return. He chose to keep the details of this private. This fall it became evident that John would not return and would instead take care of himself as he needs to do. He has spent most of the last few months in Michigan City, but was able to come back to Chicago for a while and was happy to see many of his friends here. Currently he has moved to hospice back in Michigan City, IN near his family. I saw him there on New Year's Day, and he was in great spirits. He shared much of his fondness for Saint Ignatius and the thousands of students that he has known over the years as well as the hundreds of colleagues that he has known so well. He wants people to know that his stay in hospice could be for a while, and that he is at peace. He is also tremendously happy at the birth, on December 29, of his 7th grandchild Holly Tracy, the 4th child of his son Jack and wife Cheri. His address is: John Tracy Rittenhouse 4300 Cleveland Ave. Michigan City IN 46360 Please feel free to send cards and messages.

12/10/2012
Advanced placement Exams are based on composite scores of 1 to 5, where 5 is equivalent to a grade of A in the corresponding college course. Wai Lok not only received the to s core of 5—ranking among 15.5% of students to fall within this top score category in 2012—but in doing so, was one of only 17 students in the world to earn every point possible on the Macroeconomics Exam, answering every multiple choice question correctly and earning full points on each of the essays in the free-response section of the exam. Wai Lok earned 90 out of 90. In total, 99,903 students took the AP Macroeconomics Exam in 2012. Note that he accomplished this with English not being his first language. School Principal, Dr. Catherine Karl, said, “Angus was an outstanding student here. He has tremendous academic ability, but also has great humility, compassion, and care for others. He was always the first to help when help was needed and was a real team player on Math Team and Scholastic Bowl as well. MIT is fortunate to have Angus in their freshman class this year. Congratulations, Angus, from all of us!” Ignatius math teacher, Jim Owens, said, "Angus did exceedingly well in all his classes including mine, but I was most impressed by how well liked he was, and I'm sure still is, by his classmates. He was a leader here, and I'm sure he will be a leader in whatever he chooses to do."
Saint Ignatius College Prep applauds Wai Lok for his hard work and congratulates him on this outstanding accomplishment. The school also recognizes his AP teacher, James Owens, for his ability to engage students and enable them to excel in a college-level course.

Fr. Caruso, S.J. Blesses New Crew Shell
10/17/2012
Fr. Caruso recently traveled to Rockford, IL to offer Mass for the Crew team and to bless the team’s new shell, the Bushido. The team's assistant boys varsity coach, Bryan Cheung, is a Canadian national and the terms of his visa prevent him from being paid by any U.S. entity other than his sponsoring employer. So Ignatius Chicago Crew, in lieu of paying him a stipend, awarded him naming rights for the new shell which will be primarily used by the varsity boys A boat. Bryan chose the name Bushido, which is Japanese for the “Way of the Warrior.” Bryan explained it to the ICC board as follows: Bushidō includes the preservation of one's name and making sure the relationship between learning and the way of the warrior is clearly articulated, one being a natural partner to the other. The Bushidō code is typified by seven virtues: rectitude, courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, loyalty. In addition to naming the boat, Bryan designed a special team shirt setting forth the seven Bushido virtues under the Japanese characters. You can see one of the athletes wearing the shirt in the photo below and you can also see that it was used on the shell rather than the English transliteration.

Saint Ignatius College Prep to Implement Apple iPads for All Students and Teachers
10/16/2012
At the beginning of the current school year, Rev. Michael P. Caruso, S.J., the President of Saint Ignatius, announced that this school year would have the important goal of determining what was needed for Saint Ignatius to become an iPad school by the start of the next school year. As the officers of the school, along with its technology, library, and academic administration departments continued to explore this goal, it has been determined that it is feasible and desirable for the school to move forward on this important project.
Saint Ignatius College Prep is now excited to announce that all students in the school will have access to an Apple iPad for the 2013-2014 school year. Saint Ignatius has been investing in technology upgrades for years. As a result, the iPad program put forth by Fr. Caruso, S.J., was very much in line with work that the school’s technology committee had been doing over the past several years. This includes the current “bring your own” program that has allowed students the option to bring their own computing devices to school.
School Principal, Dr. Catherine Karl, said, “We fully anticipate that each student will have an iPad next year and will be using it in all classes, in most cases replacing textbooks. A complete plan including a timeline is forthcoming, but we will be getting iPads into the hands of teachers first so they can get a jump start on this new technology.”
Professional development and training for teachers on using the iPad will take place throughout the current school year and will also occur in department meetings, during the school’s February in-service day and at other times. Recently, members of the school’s technology committee attended an all-day session at the Apple offices in Chicago regarding the iPad program. This group was able to bring information back to school departments and will be instrumental in planning ongoing professional development once teachers receive their iPads.
When asked about the iPad program, English teacher, Tony Harris, said, “I'm encouraged by the possibilities the iPad will bring into my classroom. I already have several students with e-readers who have demonstrated how valuable it is to have instant access to dictionaries for the texts we read in class. The iPads move this executive function up the ladder of cognition.”
Saint Ignatius has been working with Apple on a work template that will include continued infrastructure upgrading, compatibility with current systems, hardware and software including APPS. This multi-layer initiative will come to life during the year.
John Chandler, Saint Ignatius College Prep’s VP of Development and Operations, said, “In order to ensure a smooth implementation of the iPad program, the school is finalizing plans for the infrastructure support and developing a cost analysis for those needed improvements. The school is also committed to making this program affordable for all families.”
Currently, textbooks can cost anywhere from $500 or more per year for each student. As students get into the upper grades, the costs go up from there, especially if the student is taking Advanced Placement classes. Greg Gleason, the School’s Vice President of Finance, said, “I’m very excited about iPads coming to Saint Ignatius in the classrooms. Although it may seem there would be a large upfront cost to acquire this technology, the reduced text book expenses over the next four years will be financially beneficial to our families and students.”
Teacher Megan Doherty, said, “I think this will change the culture of our learning community in a very positive way. This is going to transform the classroom experience and provide for individualized learning opportunities outside the classroom. Students can come to class with their individualized portfolio of photos, poems, movie clips, music videos, examples of an assigned archetype—all stored in one place—and share with a small group. Instead of seeing a couple of examples from the teacher directed class, students will have an unlimited number of examples to reinforce their understanding of the concept.”
The next step of the project is to begin with teachers and to put iPads with APPs in their hands as soon as possible. The Board of Trustees of Saint Ignatius has enthusiastically affirmed the direction and timing of the iPad initiative that will include purchase of iPads, APPs, and infrastructure upgrades necessary to support this program.
Please visit the links below for more information about the benefits of using iPads in the classroom.

9/27/2012
 Dear Friends,
Dr. Catherine Karl recently announced to the Saint Ignatius community that this would be her last year as principal after serving nine very productive years in this capacity. I know you will join me in acknowledging her untiring efforts to make Saint Ignatius College Prep the outstanding school it is today. Among her many accomplishments I would cite the following:
Expansion of Fine Arts programming Implementation of WOLFPACK schedule Increase in ACT scores each year for the past 7 Highest enrollment in the history of the school @ 1400 + this year Post-prom and prom "in the neighborhood" Dr. Karl has distinguished herself as a leader of leaders. During her years at SICP she has served on the following boards: The Jesuit Secondary Educational Association, Christ the King Jesuit Academy, and the National Catholic Educational Association. She is widely sought for her wisdom and advice in leading high schools. Many will recall that Dr. Karl taught English at Saint Ignatius from 1978-1987, so we actually are celebrating eighteen years of service. I am personally grateful for her friendship and guidance in my transition as president. She has always been a voice of clarity and seeing the positive in people and opportunities. I have been especially impressed with her love for our students and always challenging them to be men and women for others. As the year unfolds there will be opportunities to celebrate and recognize her leadership. She is looking forward to the gift of time and some free evenings to discern the next chapter of her professional life. Please join me in thanking her for service to the mission of Saint Ignatius College Prep. Sincerely, Fr. Michael P. Caruso, SJ

About the Event As President Clinton observed, “religious freedom is . . . our first freedom.” It was central to the Founders’ vision for the American political community. They did not always agree about what religious freedom means or requires, but they knew that it matters, and that it should be respected in policy and protected by law. James Madison, the Father of our Constitution, hoped that America’s religious-liberty experiment “promised a lustre to our country.” This lecture will take stock of this experiment and consider the rights of religious believers and institutions and their roles and voices in American public life today.
Speaker Richard Garnett is Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Professor of Law and Concurrent Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame Law School. A graduate of Duke University and Yale Law School, Garnett has been visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School, Northwestern Law School and other institutions. In 1996-1997, he served as clerk to Chief Justice William Rehnquist. His work focuses on the freedoms of speech, association, and religion, and on constitutional law more generally. He is working on a research project entitled Two There Are: Understanding the Separation of Church and State. A regular contributor to national print and broadcast media, he writes for several law-related blogs, including “Mirror of Justice,” “PrawfsBlawg,” and “Law, Religion, and Ethics.”

Girls Volleyball Ranked in Top 100 in the Nation
8/20/2012
The team was recently ranked 97th by Prep Volleyball’s preseason poll for the first time in the program’s history. Last year the team was ranked at 523. Last year’s loss to Hinsdale Central in the regional final provided a disappointing end to an otherwise solid 29-8 season. However, the Wolfpack graduated just four players from that team and return one of the best setters in the business in 5-11 Wake Forest recruit Sophia Dodd. Dodd will set 6-1 Connecticut recruit Camille Evans (252 kills) and 5-11 outside Rachelle Lock (166 kills) on the left and should love setting athletic 6-3 sophomore Kristen Somerville, one of the standouts for the Michio 15 Open national championship team, in the middle. Illinois-Chicago recruit Casey Harris, a big blocker, is the other middle, while sophomore Kristi May will also set so that Dodd can attack from the right side in three rotations. Jana Brusek takes over as the full time libero.

Saint Ignatius Partners with Provision Theater

8/16/2012

Saint Ignatius is excited to announce our partnership with Provision Theater. Provision Theater Company, located at 1001 W. Roosevelt, will begin their 2012-2013 season with the opening of SHAW VS. CHESTERTON: THE DEBATE, adapted and arranged by Provision Theater Founding Artistic Director Timothy Gregory. This comedic drama is based on actual debates and exchanges between George Bernard Shaw and G.K. Chesterton - two of the greatest literary minds of the 20th century - as they square off in an electric, humorous, and relevant war of words. Witness actual exchanges between these great intellectual heavyweights as they battle it out over multiple topics that sound remarkably relevant today. The play also explores the complexities and deep admiration these "friendly enemies" had for each other that solidified their relationship for decades. ProvisionTheater will be offering administration, faculty, students, and alumni $5 off adult admission throughout the entire run of the show, which is Sept. 8 - Oct. 28. The code to receive this discount is "wolfpack" so we'll just want to make sure this is included in the newsletter so people know the code for when they call in to purchase tickets. To purchase tickets, call 312-455-0066.

Fr. Caruso, S.J. Radio Interview 8.16.12 for His New Book

8/9/2012
If you are a Sirius XM radio subscriber, be sure to tune in on August 16 at 1:30 p.m. to hear our very own Fr. Caruso interviewed about his new book. Please visit http://catholicchannel.org to link to the Sirius XM channel. The book is titled When the Sisters Said Farewell and includes a forward by Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York. The book tells an important story of the contributions of Catholic elementary schools to the United States by chronicling the experiences and insights of religious women (nuns) who were the last members of their communities to serve in parish elementary schools, and of those lay men and women who were the first to serve in those roles traditionally filled by the sisters. The dramatic numerical transition from the preponderance of religious women to lay leadership from the 1960s to the 1980s has been documented and this new book describes the how and why sisters left Catholic schools. This book also provides instructive insights about leadership, transitions, and current trends in religious life and Catholic education. As all educators in Catholic, private, and public schools grapple with questions of delivering an excellent education, this book offers a glimpse into the workings of one of the most amazing educational enterprises in the history of the United States. The book is also available in hard and soft cover on amazon.com as well as Kindle.

Jesuits Embark on First-Ever Initiative to Strengthen Global Network of Secondary Schools Fr. Caruso will travel to Boston at the end of July to participate in the International Colloquium on Jesuit Secondary Education (ICJSE), the first-ever global meeting of Jesuit secondary schools in the 450 year history of the Jesuits. ICJSE seeks to strengthen the global network of Jesuits schools by providing a venue to share ideas, discuss common strengths and challenges, examine our Jesuit mission and identity, and focus on how Jesuit school educators can prepare students to become global leaders. “The enormous challenges to Jesuit education today require our best efforts in order for us to serve the mission that has been entrusted to us,” said Superior General Adolfo Nicolas, SJ, head of the Jesuits. “By gathering as a global body of Jesuit secondary schools for the first time we can begin to establish ways of collectively preparing our students and school communities to address the … welfare of the entire world and its development in a sustainable and life-giving way.” 371 educators from 61 countries on six continents are registered for the event. In addition to , attendees will represent schools from Australia, Congo, China, El Salvador, Italy, and many other countries. “As an educator, this is a truly remarkable opportunity,” said William Kemeza, president of Boston College High School, the host of the summit. “The Jesuit network of secondary schools possess extraordinary potential to shape students from across the globe into truly global citizens. Our collaboration will make our schools stronger and broaden the perspective of the students we serve.” The ICJSE will take place in Boston from July 29 to August 2, 2012. It will take place on the grounds of Boston College. For more information, visit www.icjse.org.

Braeden Lord ’11 Takes Best Delegate at Chicago Model UN
7/6/2012
Braeden is currently the Program Director for Boston College Model UN and will be the Secretary General for their inaugural conference where they plan to have 200 delegates from 10 schools. He will also serve as the Deputy-Director of Simulations for the Chicago International Conference, which is the highlight of the Model UN circuit for Ignatius. Braeden competed at four international conferences this year: Yale, Boston University, McGill, and Harvard and received an award in all four, including Best Delegate as Russia in the Harvard International Conference (considered the national championship).
Braeden said the most important thing is that none of this would have happened if Saint Ignatius Model UN weren't such a fantastic program and if Mrs. Haleas and Mrs. Doherty weren't the best teachers, coaches, and mentors that MUN has to offer. He also said there is no way he could possibly repay those teachers for what they've done for him and so many other students. See www.EagleMUNC.org or coverage on www.BestDelegate.com for more.

Spalding Presented with Dei Gloriam; Acceptance Speech Here
6/12/2012
Former teacher and coach, James Spalding, was awarded the 2012 Dei Gloriam Award on May 31st during graduation. The award is the highest honor bestowed by Saint Ignatius College Prep and was given in recognition of Mr. Spalding's extraordinary commitment to the church, Jesuit education, and Saint Ignatius College Prep. Below is the speech that Jim delivered to students, faculty, staff, family, and friends after receiving the award. Congratulations again to Jim and many thanks for his years of service to the school. "Thank you, Fr. Caruso and everyone responsible for my receiving this award. Words alone can't express the gratitude I feel for this honor. I'd also like to give a shout out to my lovely wife, Mary Jo, who has been my north star for nearly 40 years. Just to show you that Germans can be sentimental, 6 days from now will be the 40th anniversary of our 1st date. It really wasn't that much of a date. She had 3 little kids with her and I had 5 Ignatius sophomores with me...but hey. Small steps I'd like to acknowledge this magnificent faculty who has not only educated you graduates, but, hopefully, has inspired you. To the parents of the graduates, congratulations. You are responsible for having given these young men and women their fine minds, bodies and value systems. I know what a challenge that can be. I also raised 4 teenagers...well, truth be told, my wife raised 4 teenagers, but I was standing really close while she was doing it. Finally, to the graduates, Congratulations. We are all very proud of you. Wow! Old man gets to tell life story to 300 trapped teen-agers. That’s like Grandpa-heaven. Sadly, I was told that I'm only allowed 3 minutes to speak to you. When I told Mrs. Bucio that last week, she laughed and said that it takes me more than 3 minutes to say, "Pass the salt." We'll see! Anyway, I want to tell you a very short story then I'll give you your homework assignment and be done. The story is about an episode of a television program from the mid-'90's called "Homicide" and about 2 Ignatius graduates involved in the production of that show. One of them,James Yoshimura, class of '68, was a writer for the show. The other was the actor, Andre Braugher, from the class of 1980. During this episode, Andre's character is talking to a nun, and he says, "Sister, when I was in grammar school, the nuns taught me how to act and what to think...and I felt perfectly safe. Then I went to St. Ignatius High School, and the Jesuits taught me to think for myself...and I haven't felt safe since." When I heard that line and thought about it, I realized what an integral part of Jesuit education that is. The history of the Jesuits is replete with those who thought for themselves and often paid the price for expressing those thoughts. I'm not sure why Andre's character felt "unsafe"; I can only hazard a guess. Perhaps it was because he was afraid of making a mistake, but that is a fruitless fear. Of course, he would make mistakes. Making mistakes is a part of life's experience, and learning from those experiences is called "wisdom". So, dear graduates, here’s your homework. From this moment on, think for yourselves. Listen to everyone, but don't let anyone else, including me, tell you how to think. Go out there, risk making your mistakes, gain your experiences and everyday, for the rest of your lives, grow in wisdom."

This past weekend, a record three varsity girls crews from SICP competed against the top scholastic rowing teams at the SRAA National Championship Regatta on Friday, May 25th and Saturday, May 26th in Camden, NJ. The Junior Four, comprised of Lizzy Cahill coxswain, Meghan Connery, Emily Austin, Annie Zwick, and Frances Enger kicked off the weekend for the Wolfpack. The Varsity 4+ and the Varsity Lightweight 8+ were able to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, taking different roads to get there. The Varsity Four, Julia Kruse, Austin Mroz, Alexa Campbell, Katie Luchette, and Kaileigh Moore coxswain; overcame a loss of their electronics during the heat, to qualify in the repechage in the afternoon for the semi-finals. The Varsity Lightweight eight - Monica Bernardo coxswain, Morgan Mroz, Briggs Mroz, Christine Oksas, Elizabeth Simon, Georgia Molnor, Aly Korabik, Maddie Travnik, and Anna Lyons - advanced to their semi-final after taking fourth in the toughest heat, holding off a hard charging crew from Marietta (OH) by just 2 seconds. On Saturday in the semi-finals, the Varsity Lightweight eight ended up finishing 6th, for an overall place of 11th in the nation. The Varsity 4+ finished out its year with its best row of the season, taking 5th in its semi-final, and missing out on the petite final by less than a length. Their time of 5:46 earned the girls the fastest time to not qualify for the final in any of the three semi-finals, meaning they can proudly say they finished 13th in the nation.

Keelan Second and Seventh at IHSA Track Championships
5/29/2012
Wolfpack junior Jack Keelan started at the very back of the pack after the first lap of the 3200-meter run in the IHSA state championships in Charleston, IL, last Saturday, May 26. But at the end of the race he won the second place silver medal in 9 minutes and 8.48 seconds with a fast closing sprint, behind Oak Park-River Forest senior Malachy Schrobilgen (9:03.42). Two hours later Keelan returned to the track for the 1600-meter run, and, once again, after the first lap, he was trailing the pack. As the winner Leland Later of New Trier (4:09.95) made his strong move on the last lap, Keelan moved through the field of 12, as well, finishing seventh in a time of 4:15.77. Keelan set a school record of 4:13.63 the day before to win his heat and qualify for the final; he broke the record of Mike Patton ‘81. Only Schrobilgen joined Keelan in doing the tough 3200-1600 double in the competitive 3A meet—made tougher by the 95 degree heat both days. Scoring 11 points, Keelan gave the Wolfpack the 23rd team spot in the 3A meet for the state’s biggest schools; the Wolfpack were the number one Chicago Catholic League team. “Watching Keelan compete at the highest level was inspiring to our other boys at the meet, who watch him every day at practice and know how hard he works,” said Coach Ed Ernst. “They want to return to the state meet next year to score more points.” Jack Keelan trails the pack in the 1600 meter final at the IHSA state track championships, held at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday, May 26. He would finish 7th, at the end, in 4:15.77. Photo by Steven Bugarin. 2 Varsity Boys Crews Place in Top 10 at Nationals

Over Memorial Day Weekend, the Wolfpack sent two varsity boys crew boats to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America's National Championship. The Varsity Heavyweight 4+ of Ben Oleniczak, Peter Voss, Cameren DeCaluwe, Lucas Gonzalez, and Brian Hansen placed 10th, taking 4th in the petite final. The Varsity Lightweight 4+ of Owen Skelding, Patrick Engel, Billy Hrabak, Kristoff Peterson, and Sydney Green placed 6th after earning a spot in the events grand final. Both crews easily advanced out of their opening round heats by open water, with the V4+ taking 2nd and the VL4+ taking 3rd. The semi-finals were a different story for both crews, as they both took part in incredibly thrilling racing. In the V4+ semi-final, spots for both the grand final and the petite final were on the line. In a thrilling race against Melbourne High School, the top crew from Florida, the Pack pulled an incredibly fast 5:00.86, which was good enough for the 6th fastest time in all of the semis. Melbourne would not be topped in this race though, as the V4+ fell just short of the grand final spot, missing out on 2nd place by 1.8 seconds. TDespite such a greuling race, the crew was still able to pull out a 4th place finish in the petite final just hours later. In the VL4+'s semi-final, the crew entered the last 100 meters of the race in a clear 4th, but left the crowd in the grand stands in silence as it completely walked through a crew from St. Joe's Collegiate Institute, a finalist from Stotesbury, in 10 strokes, earning a 3rd place finish and the last spot in the grand final. The official results say that the VL4+ topped the crew from Buffalo, NY by just .2 seconds. The crew would eventually go on to hold its own in the Grand Final, finishing 6th with a time of 5:12.

James Spalding to Receive 2012 Dei Gloriam Award
5/2/2012
Former teacher and coach, James Spalding, will be awarded the 2012 Dei Gloriam Award on May 31st during graduation. The award is the highest honor bestowed by Saint Ignatius College Prep and was given in recognition of Mr. Spalding's extraordinary commitment to the church, Jesuit education, and Saint Ignatius College Prep. The Dei Gloriam Award had been presented every year at the school’s annual Benefit, but in recent years, a new tradition was begun when the presentation was made at the Class of 2009 commencement ceremony. While the school did not start giving out the award until 1978, people still associate the origins of the award with the inaugural “Hope for Ignatius” benefit concert at the Auditorium Theater on December 18, 1976. Shortly before the late Mayor Daley passed away, he gave the key to the city to Bob Hope the week before as part of the promotion for that event. Both the benefit concert and the Dei Gloriam Award were started by Fr. Joe Bowen, S.J.

Boys Track Wins CCL Indoor Championship!!!
3/28/2012
The Saint Ignatius boys track team surprised their Chicago Catholic League rivals with a victory over favored Providence Catholic on Saturday, March 17, at the University of Chicago’s Henry Crown Field House. Ignatius scored 96 points to win over Providence (90), Loyola (87), Mount Carmel (67), Brother Rice (49), St. Rita (42), De La Salle (42), Leo (35), St. Laurence (24), Fenwick (10), Hales Franciscan (20), and Seton (7). The last Ignatius CCL victory in boys track was in 1991. The outcome was in doubt until the final event, the 4x400 meter relay. With the Wolfpack needing second place to guarantee victory, sophomore Conor Dunham (52.1 seconds) took the lead on the first leg, and juniors Andrew Reardon (53.6) and Zeb McLaurin (53.6) pulled away from the rest of the pack with Providence. Barring a mishap, the Wolfpack seemed to have the meet won, but junior Jack Keelan (53.3) left no doubt, dramatically passing the Providence anchor with 100 meters to go to win the event with a season best time of 3 minutes 32.69 seconds. It was a genuine team win, as the only other first place for the Wolfpack was Keelan’s win in the 3200 with a new meet record of 9:25.91. Keelan went back on the track just 35 minutes later to score important points in the 800-meter run as he placed second in 2:00.04. Senior Patrick Santino was another big point scorer for the Wolfpack, taking second in the 3200 (9:33.56) and the 1600 (4:33.67), finishing with dramatic sprints in both races. The rest of the Wolfpack’s points came from twelve other team members. In the 4x800, seniors Clifford Vickrey (2:15.1) and Mike Tonner (2:06.8) teamed with juniors Andrew Musur (2:15.5) and Reardon (2:20.5) for third. Dunham was fourth in the 55 meter hurdles (8.03), with sophomore Chris Hawkins fifth (8.17). Dunham (23.6) and Hawkins (24.2) teamed with sophomore Sheldon Pierce (24.6) and junior Andrew Eady (24.4) for third in the 4x200 relay, running a season best time of 1:36.71. Sophomore Taylor Dugas ran a personal best 2:03.84 for fifth in the 800. McLaurin (53.07) and junior Elliot Gibson (54.33) were fourth and seventh in the 400. Senior Peter Devitt ran a personal best 4:40.56 for fifth in the 1600. In the field events, Hawkins was eighth in the long jump (19 feet and 8 inches) and third in the triple jump (40-05.5). Pierce jumped a personal best 5 feet and 10 inches for fifth in the high jump. Gibson cleared a personal best height of 11 feet even for fourth in the pole vault, with senior Kyle Kelley-Carter eighth (9-00.00). “It was an every point counts kind of meet. We needed a whole bunch of things to happen in our favor, and they happened,” said Coach Ed Ernst. “But we also asked some boys to put personal goals aside in order to help the team. Our boys really deserved this win.” Men - Varsity - Team Rankings - 15 Events Scored =============================================================================== 1) Saint Ignatius 96 2) Providence 90 3) Loyola Academy 87 4) Mount Carmel 67 5) Brother Rice 49 6) St. Rita 42 6) DeLaSalle 42 8) Leo Catholic 35 9) St. Laurence 24 10) Fenwick 23 11) Hales Franciscan 20 12) Seton Academy 7

Patrick Santino '12 Wins 2nd in the 3200
3/28/2012
Senior co-captain Patrick Santino ran a personal best time of 9 minutes 17.94 seconds to place second at the Illinois Prep Top Times invitational track meet on Saturday, March 24, at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Billed as the “unofficial indoor state championship meet,” the meet sets entry standards and invites only the top high school athletes from around the state to compete. Santino chased Tyler Yunk of Belvidere North and William Hague of Loyola Academy through most of the race, passing the first 1600 mark in 4:39 in third place. Santino’s effort to catch Yunk, after both had passed Hague in the last laps, fell a second short. Santino’s was the fourth best time so far this year by any Illinois high school runner—and number 18 for the whole United States. “Patrick has worked very hard over the last four years to get to this big race,” said coach Ed Ernst. “We think he can run even faster when we get outdoors this spring.”

"40" Offers Provocative & Entertaining Spiritual Movies for Lent
2/16/2012
In partnership with Loyola Press and Loyola Productions, the Chicago-Detroit Province of Jesuits is offering 40, a provocative and entertaining spiritual resource and companion for Lent 2012.
40 has been developed to invite a wide variety of audiences—from active Catholics to spiritual seekers—to (re)discover the spiritual journey and lessons of this vital season. It’s also been developed to offer teachers, ministers, and parents a different approach to engaging others in Lent.
40 is a web-based “post-apocalyptic drama” (akin to Lost) that begins Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012. In the debut episode, we are introduced to seven strangers who appear to be the only survivors of a mysterious event that has left Los Angeles empty, devoid of people. From there the story unfolds throughout Lent in 14 episodes—2 per week—that run 4 to 7 minutes apiece. As a Lenten allegory, the themes of exile and journeying, loss and grief, hunger and thirst, mortification and fasting, sin and redemption, the path through the desert and the way of the Cross are dramatically “mirrored” by the story as it develops onscreen.
40 is accompanied by reflection questions and resources that can be used individually or in groups. These companion materials help viewers make connections between the storyline, scriptural references, and meaning of Lent.
We invite you to learn more and view the trailer by visiting the province’s website http://www.jesuits-chgdet.org/.
